We are proud to announce Billy Thompson as our new Executive & Technical Director.

Billy grew up right here in the South Bay Area, playing club soccer in Cupertino before attending UCLA. In 1990, Billy captained the Bruins to the National Championship title and was named adidas College Player of the Year and an NCAA All American, finishing his collegiate career with 42 goals and 27 assists. Following college, he played professionally for French side FC Pau and then in the MLS for the Columbus Crew from 1996-2000. Billy also had the honor of representing the United States, making several appearances with the USMNT at major tournaments, such as the Presidents Cup and Gold Cup.

After a 10-year professional career, Billy remained in Ohio and joined youth club Worthington United as the Director of Coaching & Player Development. The club had tremendous success over the eight years of his leadership, growing from five coaches and six teams to over 40 coaches and more than 60 teams. In 2005, Billy was named US Youth Soccer Ohio Coach of the Year. In 2008, Worthington United partnered with the Columbus Crew SC, becoming the base of the Crew SC Youth System and charter member to the Columbus Crew.

From 2008-2015, Billy was the Columbus Crew Youth Academy Director & Coach for Boys & Girls. The program thrived during Billy’s tenure both in reach (establishing several affiliate academies), and in player success, with 20+ players going on to play professionally and more than 100 to NCAA Div I programs.

In 2014 Billy completed both the US SOCCER Youth Technical Director Course and the MLS/FFF Elite Formation Coaching Course.

Since 2016, Billy has been the Technical Director for Ohio Premier Soccer Club. The success at Ohio Premier over the last six years is no surprise. Through Billy’s leadership and coach development structure, the boys program doubled in size and a community-based girls program grew from 30 to over 150 players. The club has had ECNL Championship teams, promoted numerous players to NCAA college programs, and is now in phase two of building a 44 acre training facility with 8 fields and a mini-stadium.

Billy has a proven track record of maximizing the potential for boys and girls soccer players across all ages and levels and is thrilled to be returning home, and excited for this new opportunity with Los Gatos United. Billy will be joining LGUSC next week to join training sessions and staff meetings before his official start date of May, 15 2022. Billy’s wife Shawnda, daughter Kendal (14) and son Nicholas (12) will be joining him in Los Gatos this summer.
